Reading the Future: A Portrait of Literacy in Canada
Backgrounder on the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS)

Canadians constantly need to update and improve their skills and abilities to respond to
the ever-changing needs of the workplace now and in the future. Developing individuals'
literacy skills is the key to meeting the demands of today's economy and taking advantage
of new opportunities. Reading the Future is a study which establishes benchmarks for adult
literacy skills and demonstrates the huge impact literacy has on individuals and society as a whole.

As this release is jointly funded with the Organisation for Economic
Co-operation and Development (OECD) it is not required to be released
in both Canadian official languages.  As such the file is released in
English only.

NOTE:  Explanation for the data files

The record length of each of the countries is 1278 bytes. However, the
last byte (position 1278) is always blank since the variable in this
field has been suppressed for reasons of confidentiality.
