Abstract:
This CD contains the user's handbook and microdata guide, the microdata
files and the data dictionary for the National Longitudinal Survey of
Children and Youth, Cycle 2, 1996-1997.

The second cycle, carried out in 1996 and 1997, interviewed parents of
the same children as Cycle 1 and provides unique insights into the
evolution of children and their family environments over a two-year
period. The NLSCY will continue to collect information on these same
children every two years as they move into youth and adulthood.

Note:
Cycle 2 is a cross-sectional file only. There will be no public
longitudinal data file due to confidentiality restrictions. Longitudinal
analysis can be done through remote data access

WARNING for NLSCY (National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth )  
for Cycles 2 and 3.
WARNING about the nature of the primary and self files
 in Cycles 2 and 3 of the NLSCY. Unlike Cycle 1, where
 the primary and secondary files can be linked through
 the use of CHILDID, the records in the files for Cycles
 2 and 3 cannot be merged.

 You cannot analyze some variables
 off the primary file with variables from the 10-15
 self file. It was assumed that the CHILDID variable
 in these two files could be used to match cases
 between them. Both files
 in Cycle 1 can be linked using CHILDID. It therefore
 seemed reasonable to assume that both files in Cycle 3,
 which also have CHILDID, can be merged.

 This misunderstanding is compounded by the fact that
 the documentation for Cycle 3 does not state anywhere
 that the primary and 10-15 files cannot be linked.
 The user's guide for Cycle 2, however, contains the
 following warning.

 "The data for the self-completed portion of
 the file was separated from the main file
 to ensure that the information provided by
 children was kept confidential, even from
 their parents. In order to protect that
 confidentiality, the information from both
 files cannot be linked. An assessment and
 further suppressions were made following
 the procedures outlined in the next pages
 to ensure that the two files could not be
 linked." p. 141

 This statement really should have been included in
 the documentation for Cycle 3.

Note to users: values for suppressed variables on the file will have a code
of not stated (i.e. 9 for 1 byte field, 99 for 2 byte field, 999 for
3 byte field etc.)

Changes made to the cycle 2 NLSCY public use file.
The following variables have been regrouped into two categories:
